Art Glossary
Jade: A general term for numerous semiprecious gemstones, including nephrite, also called greenstone, and jadeite obtained as a pebble or boulder in greens and white. Extremely hard, it is worked with abrasives to form sculpture and ornaments, usually small in size. Since Jade cannot be cut by metal, the carving process has mainly been that of abrasion. Since jade working has always been laborious, requiring tremendous skill, jade objects were used for ceremonial, burial, court status, and other decorative purposes. They were rarely used as functional objects.

Japan: A loose term for hard resinous varnishes that are either mixed with paints to achieve an opaque gloss, or they're cheap enamel paints, most often black and used to decorate articles made with sheet iron.

Japan Dryer: An alkyd resin-based liquid dryer for oils.

Japanese Mending Tissue: A very thin, strong, transparent tissue paper, used by art conservators to strengthen old or worn paper or to repair tears in paper.

Jewelry: A functional, or decorative art form that involves assemblage and/or sculptural techniques to create ornamental objects, i.e., metalsmithing, lapidary, enameling, beading.

Join: To connect, usually permanently. Means of joining include the use of adhesives, nails, nuts and bolts, mortice and tenon, pegs, rivets, screws, solder, staples, stitches, tapes, velcro, weaving, welding, and wire.

Joint: A connection between two pieces of material.
